Romiley Road

On 2nd April 1871 a census was taken throughout England. The lives of the residents of Romiley Road were recorded. Their names, ages and occupations, were written in ink, waiting to be discovered over 150 years later. Their stories of struggle and celebration are told here, aided by newspaper reports, photographs, birth, marriage and death certificates and articles.

My Romiley Road project began in June 2025 when I first began transcribing the 1871 census for Romiley Road into a massive spreadsheet. Realising just how huge it was going to be, I decided to limit my research to the part of the road between the Craven Heifer and the railway bridge. Some of the residents seem to have been recorded out of order so it is possible that I included a few extras! I did some initial research on every household and then focused in on the ones that seemed most intriguing, with the most impactful stories.

You will be able to find detailed information about the residents' lives in the book that I am currently working on but for those families who did not make the book, I shall be gradually adding their details below. All 83 households will have a page.
