74 - Mary Mellor

57 year old Mary Mellor was living alone in 1871 and working as a hat trimmer, a job she had done for at least a decade. She had previously shared the property with her widowed mother Hannah (nee Wilson), who also worked as a hat trimmer.

Both Mary and her mother were born in the small village of Alport in Derbyshire. Mary's father had been Stephen Mellor, who worked as an innkeeper until his death in 1841.

10 years after the death of Stephen Mellor, the family had moved to Twyford Street in Manchester. Mary worked as a domestic servant, her brother William was a grocer's porter, brother Benjamin was a Railway Porter and grandson Stephen was at school.

Hannah and Mary then moved to Romiley Road until Hannah's death in 1867 aged 79.

At the age of 67 Mary Mellor was unemployed and living at Bosden Fold Cottages. By 77 she had moved in with James and Emma Jane Page in Broughton, Salford and is listed as being the aunt.
