73 - The Green Family

Both John Green and his wife Hannah Williamson originated from Bredbury. John was the son of Edward Green and Mary Ridgway and in the 1841 census Edward is listed as being of Independent Means so must have had some wealth. Hannah's father was a hatter named Jarman Williamson.

Hannah, aged just 15, and John, aged 24, married in December 1826 and they had 4 children. Both John and his daughter Elizabeth were working in the hatting industry in Romiley in 1841.

John was still a hatter in the 1851 census and living with the family was Hannah's brother, another hatter.

During the next decade, both John and Hannah found a different source of income. Whilst John became the bookkeeper at the Calico Printworks in Chadkirk, Hannah started her own business as a provisions dealer.

John must have joined Hannah in the endeavour as by 1871 they are both listed as retired grocers. John passed away in 1874, Hannah dying not long after in 1875.

All 4 of their children died young. Millicent living the longest at 46 years.
