63 - The Hallworth Family
Dinah Hallworth, nee Torr, was the 3rd wife of Thomas Wild Hallworth. Thomas had worked as a cordwainer (shoe and boot maker) and was born in Bredbury. In 1851 he was living on Romiley Road near to the Friendship Inn with his 2nd wife Dinah Birch, her daughter and her brother.
Dinah (Birch) died on the 13th January 1867 and on 25th February 1867 49 year old Thomas married 23 year old Dinah Torr.
Dinah Torr was the sister of William Torr the joiner and undertaker who married Susan Harrison Ridgway (Household 12).
Dinah was involved in an incident on the train in 1876. She was travelling from Hyde to Romiley with her sisters and a man on the train took a ferret out of his back then pushed it into Dinah's face. The man was fined 40 shillings plus costs for purposely intimidating 3 ladies.
By 1881 the family were living on Wild Street in Bredbury and Thomas had begun working as an assistant grocer to Thomas Wild. They had 4 children together. Their first, Ann, died in infancy. Thomas William was born in 1870 and died aged 19 in 1889. Youngest daughter Lily also died aged 19 in 1895. The only surviving child was Edith.
Thomas Wild Hallworth died in 1888, followed by Dinah in 1891 aged just 47. Alone in the world, Edith moved in with her aunt Sarah Swindells at 65 Stockport Road (Romiley Road). Sarah was a 59 year old widow in the 1901 census living on her own means. Sarah Swindells (nee Torr) had married William Swindells, a farmer from Gothic Lodge Farm, Romiley.
Edith worked as a felt hat trimmer at James Robinson and Sons and continued to live with her aunt until 1911 when Sarah passed away. She then lived at 65 Stockport Road alone for the rest of her life. She died in 1951.
