54 - The Noblett Family

Household 54 had a staggering 13 members. There were 6 siblings and a child (the Noblett family) and lodgers (the Dean family). Adding to the overflowing household were Joseph and Margaret Swindells, who were just visiting.

The parents of the Noblett siblings were William Noblett and Mary Timperley. They both passed away in 1867 and had at least 11 children together. William worked as a Calico Block Printer at Chadkirk.

In 1871 the youngest of the siblings were living on Romiley Road and working as cotton weavers. Sarah Noblett was the head of the household and is listed as housekeeper. She had an 8 year old child named Alfred who was born out of wedlock.

Sarah married James Shuttleworth, the boot and shoe maker, in 1880, and their full story can be found in my book "The Residents of Romiley Road". Sarah had an appalling time with a violent and alcoholic husband.

Margaret Noblett died in 1873 aged just 28. Her sister Jane Noblett also died a single woman in 1894.

Agnes Noblett married Henry Robinson, the son of a hatter, and they moved to Oakwood Farm Cottage, along with 2 of Agnes' siblings. Their daughter Martha would later go on to marry William Derbyshire, son of Thomas Derbyshire who worked at Chadkirk printworks.

Mary Dean was lodging with the family after her husband George Dean had passed away in 1864. She had 3 sons who all worked part time (the youngest was 7).
