53 - The Hopwood Family
The full story of Simeon Hopwood and his family can be found in my book The Residents of Romiley Road.
There I wrote about Simeon's first wife and children and how after his wife's death Simeon married Mary Wood, who was already running her own successful grocery business.
The pair then opened a shop on Romiley Road (next door to the Friendship Inn) until they were offered a considerable amount from the Co-op to rent it out and finally sell it.
Simeon was an active member of the community and a member of the Bredbury and Romiley Local Board. When he died he chose to leave everything to Mary, which caused a great deal of conflict between his sons and Mary.
