46 - The Storer Family

The Storer Family lived at Household 46. 24 year old William was born in Mellor, the eldest child of 12. His father John Storer was involved in a cart accident in 1870 whilst taking a cart of wool into Stockport for the Robinson and Schofield hatworks. John had stopped so many times for alcohol that he fell off the cart and ran over his own hand.

William trained as a Butcher and married Elizabeth Latham, who was from Trentham, Staffordshire. They setted in Romiley after the marriage in 1869 and had a daughter named Sarah Ellen.

It seems that the family left Romiley for Oldham, but they had possibly split. In 1881 Elizabeth and Sarah Ellen were living at 227 Rochdale Road in Oldham, whilst William was boarding at 68 Henshaw Street. I then could not find any other evidence of William Storer after this point. There is a death in 1889 in Wandsworth for a William Storer of the same age.

Elizabeth and Sarah Ellen remained on Rochdale Road, moving to number 161 to work at the household of Robert W Pickering, a surgeon. Whilst Elizabeth worked as his domestic servant, Sarah Ellen worked as a dressmaker.

On the 23rd August 1899 Sarah Ellen married James Mulholland, a house painter, and they all moved in together at 25A Fern Street. They had 4 children together and Sarah Ellen ran her own drapery business at 83 Lees Road, Oldham.

Elizabeth died in 1915

By 1921 their eldest son Harold was working with his father in the painting business and their 16 year old son Frank was a clerk. Their daughter Gertrude worked as a milliner. James Mulholland was still working as a house painter in 1939 aged 74. James died in 1950 aged 85 and Sarah Ellen died aged 88 in 1959.
