45 - Robert Taylor

Household 45 was lived in by just one man, 35 year old Robert Taylor. Born in Bolton, Lancashire, Robert moved with his family to Compstall when he was still very young. In the 1841 census his father was not listed and his mother worked making straw bonnets.

Like most in Compstall, Robert and his brothers found work at the mill owned by the Andrews family. His prospects looked bleak and by 1871 we know he was living alone and working as a pedlar. His fortunes changed in 1878 when Robert opened his own draper and shoe shop.

In 1881 Robert married Sarah Ann Dawson and by December 1882 Robert had to sell his shop due to not paying his rent. Sarah Ann was pregnant by this time and in 1883 their son Robert Jenkinson Taylor was born. Within a week, Sarah had passed away, very likely from complications during the birth.

Widowed, Robert moved in with his older brother in Marple Bridge and started a new business as a money lender. This business was a great success and he was able to open shops in Marple, Hyde and New Mills. He bought a 4 bedroom detached house in Marple Bridge, known as "Bleak House" and had servants.

When Robert died in 1903 he left his son a thriving business.

Robert Jenkinson unfortunately suffered from mental illness and did not make a success of his life. His story is one of desertion, domestic violence and imprisonment.
