44 - The Annable Family

Sarah Annable, or Hanible, the head of the household, was a widow from Staffordshire. Her husband, Thomas Hanible, died in 1865 aged 72.

Her lodger Jasper Swindells was baptised on 15th March 1807 at St Chad's. His parents were John and Mary Swindells. He married Susanna Clayton on 8th February 1830. They lived in a cottage owned by Samuel Booth who owned the pub named "The New Inn" or "The Bull and Heifer", according to the sales particulars in 1834. I suspect that this may be the Stock Dove as the Booth family owned the land all around the Stock Dove.

In the 1841 and 1851 census Jasper and Susanna were living at Doctor's Brow where Jasper was working as a labourer at the stone quarry. They had sons Alexander, John, Samuel and Joshua.

By 1861 Jasper was 50 years of age and widowed. Susanna had died aged 49 years in 1859. Jasper was living at Guywood, still working as a stone quarryman. His 4 sons were all working as Carters/Agricultural Labourers.

Samuel Swindells married Eliza Pollitt (daughter of John Pollitt from the Grey Horse) in 1869.

Jasper Swindells died on 25th May 1879 aged 71. Sarah Annable (recorded as Hanible in the Death record) died in 1878 aged 67.

After his father's death Samuel and his wife Eliza went to live in the back yard cellar of the Grey Horse Inn. Samuel worked as a quarryman, likely for the Pollitt family who owned the quarry at Heald Wood. They had a 9 year old son named John. Their first child, Susan, was born and died in 1870.

It seems the family were not wealthy as by 1891 they were living in a property in the yard of the Friendship Inn and Samuel worked as a Carter. They had moved to another yard, behind 43 Stockport Road (what was Romiley Road) in 1901. Samuel still worked as a farm labourer in his 60s. Eliza died in 1904 and Samuel was still at the same address in 1911, just before he died.
