33 - The Swindells Family (Daniel and Elizabeth)

A full chapter about Daniel and Elizabeth Swindells and their family is in my book The Residents of Romiley Road, which will soon be released.

Here are just a few facts about them.

At the time of the 1871 census Daniel (36) and Elizabeth (31) had 3 children named Sarah, Peter and Mary Hannah. Also living with the family were Daniel's mother Hannah, his sister Martha, and Joseph, who was married to Martha but also Elizabeth's brother (it was a complicated family tree!).

Whilst Daniel worked as a mechanic at the mill, Elizabeth ran a draper's shop.

In 1878, whilst working at Oakwood mill, Daniel witnessed a horrible incident where a colleague put his foot into a cistern of boiling water. The newspapers reported that Daniels was so agitated by the event that he wasn't much help.

That same year Daniel had 4 of his pigeons stolen. Pigeon racing was very popular in Romiley at this time.

When Daniel died in 1904 his funeral was arranged by William Torr, the husband of Susan Ridgway from Household 12.
